Jesus' knowledge of scripture would have been acquired through occasional attendance at the synagogue and… would thus have been ad hoc, aural, and disjointed. Dr. Michael L. Satlow

Description

Dr. Michael Satlow is Dorot Professor of Judaic Studies and Religious Studies at Brown University. Among many other works, he is the author of How the Bible Became Holy; the editor of Judaism and the Economy: A Sourcebook; and the founder of the remarkable online resource Ancient Inscriptions from Israel/Palestine. In this illuminating conversation with Dr. Yeshaya Gruber of the Israel Bible Center, Prof. Satlow expounds on the different types of authority that Biblical texts came to command at different periods and among different groups of adherents. How and why did a wide variety of scrolls written over many centuries eventually come to be known as "The Holy Bible"?
