Have you ever wondered what the world looked like in the time of Jesus? Did you ever say to yourself, "I wish I lived in the first century so that I could better understand what Jesus and his apostles were saying?" This course will challenge you to reconsider Judaism in the time of Jesus as a diverse collection of Jewish movements under one overarching Israelite umbrella. For example, the theological ideas of the Pharisees differed significantly from those of the Qumran community, who attempted to ensure the survival of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Zealots sought independence from Rome through the use of force, while the Sadducees and Pharisees made alliances with the Romans to preserve the Temple as well as their own political and religious influence.
When the New Testament writings began to emerge, there was not a single "Judaism," but many. One cannot begin to grasp the meaning of the New Testament without being firmly grounded in an understanding of the Jewish setting that surrounded its composition. Enroll now and begin to slowly unearth the original meaning of the Gospels from beneath the rubble of history and tradition.
