Course Info

From Eve to Elizabeth, Miriam to Mary, a host of extraordinary women populate the pages of Scripture. This course explores the roles of women and the presentation of gender in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, asking questions from both Jewish and Christian perspectives. Topics include female prophets and judges, women within the early Jesus movement, and gender dynamics in Paul’s letters. The class presents the favorable views on women and gender equality in Scripture, and also tackles the minority of texts in the Pauline corpus that seem to prohibit female leadership. Join us as we explore the biblical narratives of women and offer interpretive approaches for understanding the questions that remain relevant for gender relations today.

Very good class. Prior to this class, I knew that " Scripture" had been added, chiefly by the Greek man, Eusebius. Therefore, this corrupts "New Testament" Scripture. Examples such as the Gospel of "John" 6:4, where a whole year was added falsely, to extend Yeshua's ministry to get to the 3.5 years. It was Rome who had the Law of Women's silence. The example of Genesis 3:16 says NOTHING about it.

Overall, this was a very engaging class. I enjoy Dr. Schaser very much. However, I did find the conclusion of 1 Timothy 2 unsatisfying and wish he had gone deeper to reconcile it with the 30+ other pro-woman passages. It seems there might have been some Artemis worship co-mingling in Ephesus; if so, might this make the instruction specific to Ephesus, not prescriptive for the larger assembly?
