Dr. John (Jack) Levison (Southern Methodist University) is a well-known scholar of the Hebrew Bible, as well as a prolific author and blogger. His many books include The Holy Spirit Before Christianity; A Boundless God: The Spirit According to the Old Testament; and Portraits of Adam in Early Judaism: From Sirach to 2 Baruch. In this deeply thought-provoking conversation with Dr. Yeshaya Gruber of the Israel Bible Center, Dr. Levison explains how the prophets Isaiah and Haggai referred back specifically to the Exodus story when presenting their understanding of the Spirit of YHWH (the Creator God) in interaction with the people of Israel. The discussion addresses questions including: What is the meaning of Hebrew ruach (spirit/wind/breath) in the context of the Bible? Who is the "agent" of the Lord? Is the "spirit of holiness" the same as the "spirit of YHWH"? Does the Spirit dwell within or rest upon an entire community or within specific individuals? And how are quail and anger connected to God's Spirit?
